What is Scareware?
I recently came across a new term in the Internet lexicon - Scareware.
That’s when a window pops up and tells you your computer is infected and tells you to click on a button to fix the problem. Only it doesn’t fix the problem… it IS the problem.
There’s all sorts of variations on the theme. The popups can look like a regular Microsoft window, a Microsoft Antivirus window and more. There is an example and solution at the Technology section of Home Office / Small Business.
Essentially he says to just close your browser. Pretty drastic, I know. But it’s the safest way to avoid downloading a virus. You can always use your History to get back to tabs you had open.
