Ignorance Isn’t Bliss
Recently a customer of ours told us how GPS units had helped save him a substantial amount of money. He ran a business and was out of the office most of the time dealing with customers and suppliers. Because he was gone so much he suspected that his employees were using company vehicles at odd times and were clocking hours they weren’t working.
While he had his suspicions he didn’t have a way to prove them so one weekend he installed GPS tracking units into his vehicles without telling the drivers. He waited until Wednesday to check the information and when he did he got quite a shock. When he was out of his office his drivers would return at 3:30 but wouldn’t clock out until 5:00. Not only was that going on, he found out that his drivers were using the trucks to help their friends transport things from place to place, and were not paying for the gas they were using.
Because he didn’t pay his employees for time they weren’t working, the GPS units saved him a substantial amount of money and paid for themselves within a few days. On top of that, they helped keep his drivers in line once they learned about them.
Although it would be nice to trust all of your drivers it just isn’t realistic, and GPS devices can add an extra amount of comfort in knowing that you will be aware of every move your drivers are making.
