Free Virtual PBX Services are Here Now

A PBX or Private Branch Exchange is a business phone system that has traditionally been delivered an integrated hardware and software system from major manufacturers such as Avaya, Nortel, NEC and Siemens.

In the past few years virtual PBX or hosted phone services have hit the market in a big way. These services very often use IP phones connected to IP Telephony Service Providers or ITSPs over the public Internet network. Some notable suppliers in this space include Vonage, 8×8, RingCentral and FreedomVoice. One of the main selling points is that the virtual PBX services provide a low or zero upfront capital cost and a higher monthly recurring charge, as compared to traditional PBX systems that require high one-time investments in hardware and software.

As with many technology sectors, these services have continued to evolve to offer more features at a lower cost. We are now reached a point that several suppliers offer Free Virtual PBX services. Some of the notable suppliers with free service include Google Voice and Skype. While not completely free, magicJack offers a very low cost VoIP phone service. The cost for magicJack for a full year is about the same most other suppliers’ cost for a single month.
