I got rid of my desktop computer about three years ago, and haven’t looked back since then. For as long as anyone can remember, paying online has been all about credit cards – everyone accepts them, and you get protections against theft and fraud that no one else gives you. Well, almost. People don’t often think of experimenting with other online payment services and methods; for this reason they don’t really get to see how some services have evolved to compete with the standard credit card since the last time they looked, and others, that they know and trust, are much worse than they would ever believe. Software can either be downloaded off the internet or taken off a CD or DVD – nothing could be easier. That’s just the problem: your software, the money maker you’ve invested so much in, can simply be copied. You can put all the warnings, all the copyright claims, all the pleading on the package, it wont matter. There are pirates on those seas, and they’re not offering harbor for any piece of software. It’s not that they wouldn’t buy it if they really needed it. That’s why you created the software to begin with, to answer a need. They just can’t resist the temptation to get something for free. Well, there’s a way to make this kind of theft useless, and that’s with software license tracking.

Most software providers have turned to software license tracking to prevent theft. The strategy is simple enough: create software that requires a valid license in order for the software to run. Hard code into your startup routine a check for a license key before the program will load up the other modules. A license tracking system requires that each copy of the software be initiated with a software license key. This key might come on the package, but this option isn’t very smart. To get a valid copy running, all you need to do is enter the key right there on the package. Sure, somebody had to buy the original copy, but after that, everyone that body knows can get a copy free. It’s very impressive to give a copy of software to a potential friend and let them use the key, but that’s another potential paying customer gone. The key is to track the key.

A more sophisticated license tracking system does exactly that, tracks software licenses. This requires that when the software is installed, the purchaser obtains a software license key from you, the vendor. It requires internet access, but who doesn’t have that? When installing the software, the user is directed to your software license tracking server. There, you will require customer information and another key that identifies the copy of the software and that the customer has access to. Your license tracking system will use this identification to call up any record on the item. Some systems load up these product identifications when they are produced, but others will add them when it is used for the first time. The former alternative is better. How will your system know the identification is a valid one unless it has something to check against?

The record found or added for that item, your software license tracking system will now generate a software license key that will be transmitted back to the customer. That key may already be in the installation package of the customers copy. The installation copy will verify that the transmitted key matches the key in the software and allow completion of installation. This assures that only that copy is the original copy and not a copy of a copy. Your records will show how many times it has been installed. More sophisticated software license tracking systems will actually take some machine identification, such as CPU id, to determine if the machine it is being installed on is the same machine the original was installed on. These require the software to have been removed on one machine before it can be installed on another, unless the license is for a certain number of machines.

You’ve paid those software engineers a handsome sum for your software. Don’t lose customers who have no qualms about pirating your software. Use a software tracking system and don’t be surprise if you see your sales go up. It’s all about protecting sales, after all.

I bought my first cell phone about eight years ago, and the salesman who was helping me tried very hard to sell me a plan. I knew that I didn’t need one, because I knew I would not be using the phone that often, and a plan would cost about $20 more per month than a pay as you go cell phone, so I decided to go to a different store.

I found one at a local department store that was pay as you go, and it cost me about $25. I think it came with something like 100 free minutes of usage before I had to top up, so it turned out to be a pretty good deal for me.

The main reason that I would be using the cell phone was for my job. I am a freelance writer, and I work the vast majority of the time from home. On the occasions that I have to go out on an assignment, I bring my cell phone with me, and on those rare occasions that I actually receive a call on my cell phone or have to call someone else, I am typically only on the phone for a few minutes at the most.

The pay as you go cell phone was all I needed because I would buy $30 worth of minutes per month and not even use them all up. It cost me 10 cents a minute to talk on my cell, with an additional charge of 35 cents per day, and at the end of almost every month, I would have minutes left over. The plan the sales associate was trying to sell me cost about $50 per month.

One of my colleagues, who is a photographer with our newspaper group, said that I would realize within a few months that I should have gotten a plan, and that the pay as you go cell phone would end up costing me more. He said that I would be using my cell phone a lot more than I thought, and that I would end up saving money in the long run with a plan.

Eight years later, I have never had anything but a pay as you go cell phone and have never needed anything else. On a few occasions I have not put $30 on my cell phone account for the month. I have had to put $20 on a time or two, simply because I was building up so many extra minutes, I just didn’t see the point of piling on more.

My pay as you go cell phone has worked great for me, and I have no intention of ever having a plan. I am not saying that it is for everybody, but for me, it is all that I need.

Green Day hosting a performance at Lake Springfield.

After they finish their song, they talk about the environment. The following day at church, while they’ve a short commemorative for Green Day, Grampa is possessed by God warns the town of a future disaster.

Marge believes Grampa’s prophecy, and makes a decision to work out the meaning of the message. In the meantime , Lisa starts to speak about the environment, with no success. She encounters Colin, an Irish boy who shares the same passions as her. Homer gets a note from Marge of his chores, and one is fixing the sinkhole. Rather than fixing it, Homer puts Maggie’s sandbox over it. While fixing the roof, Homer and Bart opt to have a dare contest.

Homer shakes it so as to get Bart down. Homer dares Bart to skateboard to Krusty Burger exposed, which Bart object’s to, announcing girls will see his “doodle”. After Homer threatens to call him chicken for the remainder of his life, Bart agrees. Bart becomes stuck exposed on the window of the building. After he is apprehended by the police, and tied to a Stop sign pole, Homer turns up and they decide to reserve a meal, he brings him socks and a shirt, and no pants. Mayor Quimby declares a state of emergency and orders the cleaning and protection of Lake Springfield.

They clean up the lake, and announce it is fool explanation, using Cletus as an example to try and throw a rat in the lake, and fail. Shortly , Marge asks Homer where “Spider-Pig’s / Harry Plopper’s” waste is going.

I know most financial gurus say that everyone should create a personal budget and stick to it. This is something I’ve always meant to get around to, but have always put off because it seems like such a hassle. I don’t know about you, but the last thing I want to do on the weekend is sit around listing all my monthly bills and expenses or tracking every single penny I spend. I just figured as long as I don’t overdraft my bank account, I’m doing fine. But now that I’ve got specific financial goals I want to achieve in the near future (like saving for a house and beginning a retirement fund), I think it’s time to purchase some home accounting software to help get my money situation under control.

There are several different home accounting software programs on the market today, with varying degrees of sophistication. Some programs appear to be little more than spreadsheets that allow you to input various data about your spending habits and your income so you can determine whether you operate in the red or black every month. Though this is a bit on the simplistic side, I guess it’s sufficient for some folks.

Other home accounting software, including well-known titles like Microsoft Money and Quicken, allow you to link to your bank accounts and set up automatic bill payments right from your computer. Thus, every time you make a deposit or withdrawal from your bank or schedule a bill pay, the amounts are automatically updated for you. This could be beneficial to folks with a lot stuff going on in their financial lives, but I don’t think I need my home accounting software to do all that!

I would be comfortable with home accounting software that falls somewhere between those two extremes. In the very little bit of research I’ve done thus far, it seems that there are a couple of freeware programs that might provide what I’m looking for. I plan to download those sometime soon and see what they can do. I’ll also check out some demos for programs that I’d have to pay for if I like them. I’d rather get free home accounting software if possible, but I’m not entirely opposed to paying a reasonable price for a product that is easy to use and performs all the tasks I require of it.

My personal finances aren’t that complicated, but I am definitely beginning to understand the importance of getting all of my spending under control so I can start planning for the future. Since I’m not exactly an expert when it comes to creating and sticking to a budget, maybe a good home accounting software program can help put me on the path to financial responsibility.
