Which is the Best Internet Connection: Cable or DSL?
You hear people talk about them every day. “I have DSL and my Internet connection is really fast” or “I have a cable modem and my Internet connection will outdo DSL.” Both are high speed Internet connections so really… which one is better: is it DSL or is it Cable?
A Look At DSL
DSL, which stands for digital subscriber line, was created back in 1989 and uses a person’s already existing telephone lines to gain access to the ‘Net. DSL technology uses a copper loop transmission technology that answers the bottleneck issue that’s linked to the last mile of the Network Service providers and their users.
Now, the average speed for a DSL download is up to 1.5Mbps (megabytes per second), which is about 20 times faster than a dial-up Internet connection. For its uploading side, DSL can give between 100 and 400Kbps (kilobytes per second). Bear in mind that the speed you get will depend on how close you are to the switching station. The average monthly cost for the DSL line is around $35 to $45. Best of all, you can use your telephone line to dial out even when you’re on the ‘Net.
A Look At Cable
Cable modem, which is relatively new to the broadband market, is the intersection between a high bandwidth connection and home computing. A computer is connected to the modem by way of a coaxial cable that your local cable company will provide.
When you get cable as your Internet connection service, you’ll have download speeds between 2 and 3Mbps. However, its upload speeds around similar to DSL (around 100 to 400Kbps). You’ll pay between $45 to $50 a month for the service, which is often included as part of your cable TV package (although some companies offer the service without cable service). Again, you can use your cable line to watch television without any interruption to your Internet and vice versa.
So what’s better?
In retrospect, getting cable as your broadband connection would be the better bet for the best speed. However, it all depends on you, what your city offers, what the price packages for the phone or t.v. package entails, and just how fast you want your Internet connection to be.
