If I wanted to go all out and sell things on ebay as my primary means of income, I would have to treat the endeavor like a business and take it much more seriously. For example, I’d have to do some market research to see what kind of products have the best profit margins at online auction sites, and then I’d have to find wholesalers to provide me with those products at low prices.

Looking at the Hot list you can see which categories have been booming lately and which items are the most popular. There is also a market research guide by EBay that can give you more insight into the process and will teach you how to analyse your research data. Items on the hot list are generally those items for which bids grow faster than the amount of listings for that product.

With the help of market research on EBay you will be able to see trends in product demand, however, be aware that there are seasonal changes in demand for certain product categories. Of course you should first analyse your own offers and then the categories where you offer the products. The market research will also enable you to understand your competitors better. By looking at your stronger competitors and looking at why they are able to sell more than you do you might be able to overcome some shortages of your own offers.
