When Amelia Earhart made her attempt to fly 29,000 miles around the world, available technology only allowed her to complete about 22,000 of the miles. Had GPS (Global Positioning System) been available to her, it is likely she would have been able to find and land on Howland Island in the mid-Pacific Ocean in July of 1937. I have a paper copy of the Illinois tourist guide that I wanted to put online. This proved to be more of a problem than I had anticipated as I did want to edit things once I got them into the computer. I tried to just scan the brochure, but that only gave me an image and it is difficult to cut and paste words into an image. Then I decided to run it through an OCR program and that got me all the text, but none of the pictures. What I finally ended up with was a combination of the two methods. I scanned the entire document to get the image loaded. Then I went in with an image editor and cut blocks out where the text was. I took the text from the OCR and formatted it to fit in the same size block as I cut from the image, then I pasted them in the holes. This was a long drawn out project and was way too time consuming. I need to develop a program that can distinguish images from words, OCR the words and place them beside the images. That shouldn’t be too hard should it?

With today’s internet you just can’t live without a home computer. Even designing a vacation you can Google your way to bliss. I wanted a vacation in Illinois so I put in Southern Illinois Vacations and came up with a wealth of sights to see. I had a close friend recently move to Illinois so the wife and I decided to go for a visit and just see the sights along the way. The southern part of the state is much warmer than the northern part so a winter vacation is much better in the south. There are some beautiful sights even in the winter. The weather was mild, I was told that is because the jet stream generally stays north of the southern tip of the state. There is a variety of wildlife in the areas we went through and being the nature buff that I am I was very pleased with that. My friend is very happy he moved there. It isn’t the coast, but who needs all that pressure. The simple farm life is quite desirable. In fact there are days when I yearn for the life of my youth growing up on the farm without any complexities like computers.

Aerial satellite photos are quickly becoming one of the hottest trends in online searches. Many people love to get a bird’s eye view of the world but aerial satelite photos offer something even better than that.

You don’t need to peak over the neighbours fence as you can see all your neighbourhood on these aerial photos. You can even look at fantastic locations like the Grand Canyon and Niagarra Falls and then zoom in to see everything in detail.

I was able to see the big signs placed around the locations and read them when I zoomed in. This is good for when you are going on a trip and can see what you will be looking for when you are on the road. I have printed some of the aerial satellite photos to take with me for my next trip.

Remember the old days when you would go on vacation with the folks. Dad was driving and Mom was unfolding a ridiculously large road map in an attempt to find your route and destination. Those days are gone with the wind. These days, Internet maps are the key to finding a destination ahead of time. With the modern technology of GPS systems and online mapping, paper road maps have become obsolete when traveling near or far. Most of us no longer endure the teeth-grinding agony of locating our path of travel on a large, folded up piece of paper.

Don’t get me wrong, there are some good things about modern computer game design.  Computer game design has become a full-fledged professional field, with artists, programmers, interface designers, story borders, and all kinds of other specializations to make the most impressive games in history such as World of Warcraft Gold.  Modern computer games even have actors in them for gods sake!  But I can’t help thinking that something is been lost.

Integration of GPS technology with digital image capture is brand new, but now that Ricoh has announced the 500SE GPS-ready digital camera, I bet it won’t be long before all major manufacturers begin releasing their own models with this feature.

Regardless, auto navigation systems will make the journey much more enjoyable. You basically just program your destination in the device, and it takes over. Once it has your address, it will use its antenna to pinpoint your current location. Then it will begin routing.

I made use of Internet Maps when venturing from Oregon to North Carolina a couple years back. This was a long trip, but I did not get lost. I simply punched the addresses in the Computer, and it gave me a route to follow, I printed it out and took it along with me. It is as easy as that. Maps are great, but they sure are a pain to try to fold back up correctly when you’re on the road. My friend Mike bought a new car a couple of weeks ago and when he was showing it to me, I saw that he had one of those cool auto navigation systems in it.
