There are a lot of ways you can play music and view video on your computer, and Real Player is just one of them. I have this on my computer along with all the others that I have had to download in order to see or hear something that I found online. The problem is that my computer is slow and it can’t handle all of the media. I rarely use Real Player, but there are times when I must. It’s not helping my computer any, and now that I have a good firewall, I have found that it is slowing me down.

The Real Player wants to start up each time I turn on my computer. It takes up a lot of resources and slows my browser down. My firewall is always warning me that Real Player is trying to access the Internet. I don’t know why, though I think it is for updates on the services and all of the features they have. I always deny it, because I don’t use it very often, and the updates take forever. I can’t get anything down. There is no reason to wait for an hour while it takes its sweet time updating things that I couldn’t care less about.

Real Player has a nice library feature, and it was nice to use when I had a lot of music on my computer. After I switched to Windows XP, I found that I had a lot less space on my hard drive, and I had to take most of those songs off of my computer. Now that I don’t really listen using Real Player, I don’t have the need for it to update whenever it feels like it. It seems strange that it tries to do it every day, and a part of me worries that I have a virus that is working through the software.

Making MP3 files from CDs is an easy process because the music is already in digital format. But how about recording from things like cassette tapes and records? Although this is a little more complicated, converting these types of audio sources into MP3 files is not that difficult.

Almost all computers have soundcards that can accept audio input from an external source. That is the connection you need in order to make an MP3 recording from a cassette or tape.  To record a cassette, connect the cassette deck line level output to the sound card input.  Then using one of several available audio recording software programs you capture the sound in digital format as it is played on the cassette. Finding a decent MP3 player cheap was a difficult, if not impossible task just a few years ago, but then along came Apple with their spiffy little iPods.
